Hi,

It would be really COOL if this Ivory-Billed Woodpecker story is
true😲

Pennsylvania researchers find ‘iconic’ bird thought to be extinct for
decades Published: May. 22, 2023, 7:25 a.m.

By Brian Linder | ***@pennlive.com
Researchers in Pennsylvania have reportedly just spotted a bird that
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was considering declaring extinct
because its last “unchallenged” sighting came all the way back in 1944,
according to reports.

In an incredible finding, researchers with the National Aviary in
Pittsburgh, claim that they have captured images of the ivory-billed
woodpecker — called an “iconic species” — on motion-activated trail
cameras that they placed in Louisiana. The group reportedly recorded
the birds in “bottomland hardwood forests.”

They also reportedly used drones in 2019 to scan the treetops for the
birds and their techniques reportedly returned “numerous images” of the
woodpeckers...

It would be very cool. Unfortunately, I heard a very similar story
about an Ivory-billed woodpecker spotted somewhere in Arkansas at least
40 years ago.

Yeah, afraid this type of "news" reoccurs every few years. Think it was
early 2000's there was a promising report from a southern state. Might
even have been Arkansas. This one was sounding good till I read about
the "fuzzy" images and other weak evidence🙄

But still, it would be really nice if it pans out😉

Yeah, it would be nice. Some good news on the Extinction front, for a
change .

In an incredible finding,
Incredible, as in "not credible", I'd say.

Have you looked at the evidence? The photos and videos? Pretty
terrible. (In some of those jpg's, I can't even tell it's a bird,
never mind if it's an Ivory-billed.)

Not trying to be a wet blanket, but we went through this back in 2004
or 2005. I was hopeful then, but not so much this time around. I'd
love to be proved wrong, though ;-)

Yeah🙄 see my reply to Jill...

With the Pileated being closely related and decent Ivory-Billed
specimens preserved here & there... would think it to be a good
candidate for some DNA cloning work.
