Hi,

I live in an apartment building with average sound-insulation and so I
was hoping that someone out there could please tell me if I were to get
a quaker parrot is it likely that the people who live above and below
me would be able to hear the bird? If so, would it keep them awake and
wake them up, or the bird won't be that loud.

Thanks,

Chris

Sorry, I got this group confused with a companion bird group I've been
reading.

A detached house around here was broken into by the police (called by a
neighbor who might have known better) because the parrot sounded like
someone being horribly tortured. I have myself heard that parrot from
the middle of the road 80 feet away. I don't know what kind of parrot,
but I can find out.

Thanks. A quaker parrot is maybe double the size of a lovebird. If it's
too loud, do you think a parakeet or a canary could be heard through
the walls? The quaker parrots in the pet shops don't make any sounds,
but from what I've read online, they are noisy.

Parakeets, canaries, budgerigars; I've seen all as apartment pets. I
wouldn't keep a caged animal myself, so I have no direct experience.

I'm new to this group, but yes, it would disturb the people above and below
you. They can be quite noisy if they want to be. That doesn't mean it
will be. I can't think of a bird that isn't noisy. I have a Parrotlet and
they are incapable of screaming but they can make noises that do get
somewhat loud. Perhaps you might look into them. They are neat birds, but
pretty small. They do talk and they are great little parrots.

Thanks, I just checked them out in Google Images. They seem to be about
the same size as the quakers (about half a foot, not counting the
tail). Are parrolets noisy for long periods of time, or it varies?

Parrotlets are not the size of quakers, they are about the size of a wild
finch or smaller, they fit in the palm of your hand. Mine does anyway. He
is a Spectacled Parrotlet, I believe he is one of the smaller ones. No he
isn't noisy for prolonged periods just when he is hungry or when he gets
excited about something. He is something of a little watch dog. If the
door bell rings he chirps etc. Other wise, he most of the time he sets and
plays with his toys, chatters to himself or just plays. They are very
active birds, basically they are playing or sleeping. My bird Cricket has a
very large cage for such a little bird, his door is left open, he doesn't
leave his cage he just climbes all over inside and out. If you get one,
get a hand fed baby just weaned. I waited 3 years for one and it was worth
the wait. I have had parakeets also and I think the noise level is about
the same. I think the thing is to ignore the noise he makes and give
attention when he is quiet. If I can ans. any more questions I would be
glad to.
